Athletics Committee Meeting Report

Athletics Committee Meeting Report – November 7th

The athletics committee met on Wednesday, November  7th in the 3rd floor conference room of the Doyne Health Science Center. The committee discussed responses gathered from athletic surveys that were compiled over the past two years. The committee also discussed the improvement of the overall athletic GPA and how by the end of the Spring 2013 semester, the average should be at a 3.0GPA.  Also our football teams APR (Athletic Progress Rate)is the highest in our conference. The committee also discussed creating a joint locker room for the tennis, golf, and soccer teams when funds become available to build this facility.

Another hot topic deliberated during this meeting was the issues of gender and diversity. Almost 50% of athletes said that men’s and women’s sports were not treated equally. Several women also felt they were not provided adequate locker rooms. The athletes also expressed concern that their gender affected how their instructors treated them. The committee also discussed how this was one of the best overall sports season that UCA has had in a long time. Dr. Brad Teague talked a lot about ways to improve this problem of gender and race, and also about how to improve overall GPA and especially APR (Academic Progress Rate).
